Kulcha, Castles, and Kindness: A Tale of Luxembourg

Day 1

Celebrating twenty years of togetherness, our first trip to Luxembourg was nothing short of magical. Meticulous planning through travel bloggers on YouTube ensured a seamless experience, and as we boarded our Ryanair flight from Dublin, anticipation filled the air.

Upon landing, Luxembourg’s compact yet charming airport set a welcoming tone. The biggest surprise? Free public transportation across the entire country—a gift that made our adventure both stress-free and budget-friendly. Our first bus ride to the hotel was delightful, thanks to a kind-hearted driver who guided us to our stop. The Mandarina Hotel staff greeted us warmly, offering to store one of our bags since we arrived before check-in. Their hospitality continued through a buffet-style breakfast, which satisfied our hunger so well that we lasted until dinner at Krishna Vilas.

Eager to explore, we set off for Vianden Castle. Our journey took a humorous detour when, due to pure ignorance, we waited at an empty train platform for an imaginary train. Realization struck as we watched others board real trains elsewhere! Laughing at ourselves, we checked the schedule, found the right platform, and finally embarked on our way.

On the train, a friendly Luxembourger not only helped us confirm our destination but personally guided us at Diekirch, ensuring we caught the correct bus to Vianden. The kindness of strangers painted our day with warmth. At the bus stop, we overheard our native language—a surprising delight—sparking an engaging conversation with two young travelers. Their local insights made our trip even smoother, and in return, we introduced them to the Vianden chairlift. As we glided above the picturesque village, they signaled us to smile just before reaching the end—we later discovered it was for an unexpected souvenir photo, a perfect keepsake of the moment.

Vianden Castle stood in majestic splendor, its medieval architecture a striking tribute to history, surrounded by stunning landscapes that captivated the senses. Just as we set out to explore the village further, an unexpected downpour forced us to cut our visit short and head back to Diekirch by bus. Exhaustion crept in, limiting conversation, yet the beauty of the countryside held our gaze, making it impossible to look away.

Our new friends invited us to visit the Sure River, but weariness won out, and we chose to return to Luxembourg by train instead. While my wife listened to two Indian couples animatedly recount their dating days, I admired the picturesque scenery—quaint backyard gardens bursting with fresh vegetables, a quiet yet charming slice of local life.

Back in Luxembourg, hunger finally caught up with us, and Krishna Vilas provided the perfect remedy. My wife indulged in a South Indian thali, while I relished a North Indian thali, its unforgettable kulcha leaving a lasting impression.

The night ended with a peaceful tram ride back to the hotel, hearts full and feet weary. The day had given us laughter, connections, and beautiful discoveries—an experience etched in memory.

The morning started with a message—our Indian friends, perceptive as ever, had suggested a trip to the Sure River in Lultzhausen. But before embracing nature’s tranquility, the day called for a stroll through Hamilius, a town rich in stores and charm.

Eager for exploration, we embarked on our tram journey from Heinhaff P + R to Hamilius. Arriving too early, we discovered a quiet town where shop doors remained closed, leaving us to admire the eye-catching storefronts without stepping inside. Noon would have been a wiser choice.

After a quick breakfast, we took the tram to Alphonse Wicker, indulging in one of our favorite pastimes—visiting massive supermarkets. The sheer abundance of fresh produce at Auchan made for a delightful experience, with vibrant fruits, vegetables, and fish lining the aisles in endless variety.

Lunch was a heartfelt recommendation—Annapurna, a buffet that reminded us of home. Warm food, a cozy interior, and the welcoming atmosphere made it a perfect spot to recharge before continuing our journey.

The tram carried us to Luxembourg train station, where we boarded a train to Ettelbruck and then hopped on a bus to Sure River. This time, we found the right platform—progress! The bus driver was kind, making the ride even more pleasant.

Arriving in Lultzhausen, we noticed a surprising calm—no tourists, just the quiet rhythm of local life. A quick inquiry led us past a church, a youth camp, and finally across the lake bridge, where the stunning waters reflected the sun’s brilliance.

A couple with their dog appeared, tracing a path along a scenic walking trail. We followed, taking in the beauty—a lake on one side, towering trees on the other. Wildflowers brightened the way, and naturally, we captured a selfie.

As we moved ahead, an unclear sign left us uncertain of our direction. Choosing instinct over hesitation, we ventured forward, only to find ourselves on an isolated road. Thirty minutes later, with no sign of transport, we reversed our steps. Google Maps guided us back, leading us to Liefrange, a quaint village where warmth awaited.

At a bus stop, a Portuguese man stood with his daughter. Though his English was limited, his enthusiasm for Luxembourg was boundless. Soon, a van arrived, and though the driver spoke no English, his kindness spoke volumes. Thanks to our new acquaintance, the driver ensured we reached Wiltz safely.

As we rode past breathtaking villages—each resembling a slice of Switzerland—we found ourselves alone in the van, precious passengers in a landscape too beautiful to rush past.

Wiltz welcomed us, and before moving forward, we treated ourselves to a chilled Battin Fruitee cider, a refreshing taste of Luxembourg.

From Ettelbruck, we took a detour to experience something new—the Luxembourg funicular, Rout Breck/Pafendall. Floating smoothly across the cityscape, it became a unique highlight of our day.

Evening settled in, and though dinner was not in the plan, time led us to Philharmonie/Mudam, a shopping center alive with late-night activity. As restaurants began closing, one remained open—glamorous, inviting.

A single pizza became our choice, made before our eyes, crafted with fresh vegetables and golden-baked dough. The flavors were exquisite—the best pizza we had ever tasted.

Curiosity sparked conversation with our Luxembourgish server. In her words, a bittersweet truth emerged—Luxembourg, a wealthy nation, carried quiet sadness. Prosperity didn’t always equate to happiness, as families drifted apart despite their material abundance.

It was a reflection worth holding onto—home and family remain the richest blessings of all.

The tram outside the shopping center carried us gently back to our hotel, closing the chapter on a day well spent.

Luxembourg had left its imprint, turning Day 2 into an unforgettable adventure.

Day 3

A Grand Farewell—the Golden Lady, the Casemates, and One Last Journey

With the sun casting its warm glow over Luxembourg, we bid farewell to our hotel, ready to make the most of our final hours in this charming city. A tram ride brought us to Place de la Institution, where the Golden Lady monument stood tall, a solemn tribute to history.

Not far from there, St. Michael’s Church welcomed us with its centuries-old presence, its architecture whispering tales of time. We then soared to new heights at the City Skyliner, marvelling at the stunning panoramic view stretching across the cityscape.

Our next stop was the fascinating Bock Casemates, a maze of subterranean tunnels with stories carved into its walls—an unmissable piece of UNESCO heritage. The long walk left us pleasantly tired, and a tram ride to Hamilius led us to the vibrant shopping district, alive with movement and energy.

Sitting outside, omelette baguettes in hand, we watched the city unfold around us—a symphony of bustling crowds and everyday moments. Before heading to the airport, we took another tram to Alphonse Wickers, making one final stop at Auchan Supermarket, where we wandered through its aisles, picking up last-minute treats and souvenirs.

As our Ryanair flight soared back to Dublin, we couldn’t help but reflect on the richness Luxembourg had offered—a perfect blend of history, culture, and adventure. A journey worth taking, and one we knew we’d cherish forever.
